Stained Glass Workshop - Ruth Stephens
Traditional Tiffany Copper Foil Stained Glass Workshop
Beginners, Intermediate, and Independent Projects
Always wanted to learn how to make stained glass or maybe you know how but want to further your skills? This workshop covers both! It is designed to teach beginner basics as well as next step concepts to students with glass cutting experience.
Three skill level options will be available: Beginner, Intermediate, & Independent. If you have already taken Ruth’s workshop or have glass cutting skills there will be a beyond beginner project with more pieces and/or more advanced cuts/skills. If you would rather pick/create your own design the Independent Project might be right for you. With the Independent option, students will work independently with help as needed. Please read through the full descriptions and make sure to choose the option that best fits your skill level on the payment page. All tools/materials/equipment will be provided with the exception of the Independent Project option (you will need to purchase your own glass for the Independent project).
Over this two day workshop students will learn how to make a stained glass project from start to finish. All tools, equipment, and materials will be provided for use during the workshop (with the exception of Independent Project - See description below). Ruth will demo each step of a Stained Glass Panel made in the traditional Tiffany Copper Foil method. No prior experience is necessary for this class. Closed toe shoes required.
For our Beginner students, this workshop is a great way to “get your feet wet”. Students will choose from two traditional design templates to ensure you leave with a base of set of skills you can easily build on.
* Glass Cutting: Scoring/cutting various types of glass
* Grinding: Grinding the edges of cut-glass pieces using a Grinder
* Copper Foiling: Applying adhesive copper tape to glass edges "Tiffany method"
* Soldering: Using soldering iron and solder to join the foiled pieces together
* Finishing: Applying patina (color change) and polish to the solder lines.
Intermediate skilled students will receive a more advanced project to challenge and learn new skills. This option is perfect for people that have taken a previous workshop with Ruth or have prior glass cutting experience. The project for this workshop will be a Suncatcher. You will have a choice from two different designs. All glass, materials, and equipment will be provided.
Independent Project students will start with a mandatory “planning session” 7 days prior to the workshop. During this additional 1.5 hour session you will present your proposed project to Ruth. She will work with you to achieve your goal within the two day session. Each student will design one 12”x12” (or smaller) project of 15 pieces or less. Before the first day of glass cutting you will need to finalize your design, make the cartoon, and print/draw out your cartoon on adhesive paper. You will also need to purchase your own glass. Kiss My Glass in Santa Cruz is a good place to purchase small pieces. Not all glass is created equal, avoid buying fusing glass. All other materials, equipment, and tools will be provided to use during the workshop.
Requirements: Closed toe shoes required.
Date: August 1st & 2nd
Planning Session for Independent Project Only (Mandatory): July 25th, 10-11:30am
Time: 10am - 2:30pm (30 minute lunch break)
Price: non-member price: $225
